Picture the scene- a 10-day old newborn baby, 3 hours sleep, baby sick on your shoulder, swollen boobs as your milk has just come in and you’ve not had time to put any make up on. I think it’s unlikely you’ll turn up for a newborn photoshoot wanting to be in any of the photos! I have many parents in this scenario saying point blank they only want photos of their new baby. Let me tell you why you need to reconsider.
Why Be In The Photos
These photos aren’t just for you but also for your child when they grow up. Your relationship is one of the most important relationships either of you will ever have and the marking the milestones in your childs life is something that both of you will treasure forever. Imagine how much a photo of you looking at your newborn baby with complete fascination and adoration will mean to your child when they are grown. Looking back at these photos will give them a sense of belonging and show them how much they are loved.
Then imagine how much you will treasure a photo of your child who was so tiny they could fit into your hands. One day that baby you’re holding in your arms is going to become a toddler, teenager and then even an adult. You’ll have a hard time believing that there was a time when their teeny fingers couldn’t even wrap all the way around your fingers.
The Photoshoot- How it Works
Firstly, I often do parent and newborn shots at the end of the session so while I’m working away with your little one getting all their gorgeous shots, you have plenty time to get changed, put some make up on or simply rest. I once had a Dad go and nap in the playroom during the photoshoot as he had just finished a night shift! Once he woke up he was happy to get involved and be in the family shots.
I always send a preshoot check list of recommendations of what to wear well ahead of the photoshoot so you can easily prepare. My style is natural, simple and timeless so just wearing a white jumper, dress or t shirt means you don’t need to worry about adding to your wardrobe for the session. I always recommend bringing spares just in case as little ones have a tendency to have at least one accident during a newborn photoshoot. I photograph postpartum Mums so often that I know all of the best angles and lighting to create images that you will love, even if you’re not feeling your best. So don’t worry about any mummy tummies being on show as I often position new Mums so the baby is in front of them.
I’ve got plenty tricks up my sleeve to capture stunning photos of new parents with their babies including backlit shots. For those that are camera shy, other beautiful shots to capture with parents includes shots of their baby in their purely their hands or arms. In years to come showing your child how tiny they were in your arms is something they’d otherwise find hard to believe.
I hope reading this will encourage you to be in photos with your newborn baby as you will never regret these precious moments captured forever. Don’t let these precious moments pass you by. I’d recommended booking your newborn shoot whilst you’re still pregnant to ensure availability around your due date. For more information about the newborn photoshoot experience, please get in touch.
